Dear Colleagues,
We (Sarah M. Rowe and Sonia Zarrillo) are planning an Ecuador session for the 76th Annual Meeting of the Society for American Archaeology to be held in Sacramento March 30-April 3, 2011.. We anticipate that there will be more than one session, with the themes being decided once we see what the response is. In addition, we are also planning an edited volume encompassing an overview of Ecuadorian archaeology as well as topical papers either taken from or inspired by the sessions. We feel that with an edited volume (An overview of recent and current Ecuadorian archaeology) the logical division of sessions is by time period (PaleoIndian/Archaic, Formative, etc.) with each session open to papers from all regions. However, we are open to suggestions. Here is initial abstract:

"Current Understandings in the Modern Age of Ecuadorian Archaeology"
"In 1951 Geoffrey Bushnell published The Archaeology of the Santa Elena Peninsula in South-West Ecuador, and although at the time he did not recognize the antiquity of the material he uncovered (Early Formative), it marked a turning point in Ecuadorian archaeology by shining a light, and stimulating research, on the Santa Elena Peninsula in particular and other regions of the country in general. Since then, and despite sixty years of outstanding research on all time periods there have been few broad syntheses on Ecuadorian Archaeology. These sessions will present recent and current research from all time periods and regions represented by the archaeological record of Ecuador."

As mentioned earlier, we anticipate that a number of sessions will be generated and we invite submissions for all time periods and from all regions. If you are interested in presenting, please reply with a title/brief description of the theme of your presentation so that we can place you in the appropriate session.

The deadline for submitting presentation abstracts via the SAA online submission system is Thursday, September 9, 2010 at 3pm EST.
