ARQUEOLOGÍA DE SARAGURO / SARAGURO ARCHAEOLOGY

© 2000/2004 Jim Belote & Linda Belote

In the 1960s and early 1970s while primarily engaged in cultural anthropological research among the people of Saraguro, we also undertook archaeological surveys in the Saraguro region. The people of the area graciously shared their knowledge with us, showing us many archaeologically interesting sites and materials. We walked many kilometers over hills and mountains, through valleys and across rivers, in search of archaeological materials. We gathered data on locations of sites and on the surface material we encountered (we did no excavations). We photographed hundreds of artifacts and dozens of sites and drew many pictures of the same.

At that time little professional archaeological work had been done in the region and most of that involved primarily surveys and/or limited excavations (Bedoya, Collier and Murra, Verneau and Rivet, and Uhle). Since then, however, more extensive research has been undertaken by various archaeologists (Boynter, Carmichael, Bray and Erikson, Leonard, Ogburn, Ogburn and Bravo, Rehren & Temme, Temme and Villón).
