Evidence of a long war between the Incas and the Cayambe of Ecuador has been uncovered with the discovery of 20 fortresses built by the Inca and 2 by the Cayambe on the Inca frontier. The Spanish told of a long 17 year war between them. The Spanish said the Incas prevailed in the end and massacred the Cayambe at a lake. The fortresses give some validity to the idea of a long struggle. One of the fortresses, Quitoloma, has 100 structures filled with Inca weapons. The Cayambe fortresses also had weapons, sling stones and bola stones, but no signs of a mass slaughter. And there is evidence that the Cayambe continued to occupy the area for a long time, perhaps becoming allies with the Inca.
